Are Coupons Worth it?

Saturday, April 18, 2009 | | 2 comments
Here are two of Sheshopssmart reader's recent experiences with coupons! I would dare say coupons ARE worth it!

This is from my good friend Emily. We both looked into Grocery Smarts at the same time and had our concerns. Needless to say we are both completley obsessed. Thanks Emily! Here is her story!

Here is my last trip to Albertsons. I had "baby" with me.....-- making my cart look hilarious! Baby fills most of it so I layed chips and light things on his lap and on top of his car seat. I should have taken a picture at the store. People probably thought that there was something wrong with me, or that I was afraid I would never see a grocery store again. They can think whatever they want though.

I roll up to the check stand and the cashier says WOW you are buying a lot. I said UH HUH and I have a TON of coupons. I like to warn them. I feel like when I dont, that they get a little bit snippy with me. So, she scans it all, then takes my coupons. AND THE FUN BEGAN!

So, the Preferred card does its thing in the computer and after a few I think she probably thought this is dumb and this girl is a tight-wad. Then I said we just passed the saved $100 point she looked at me in disbelief. It was the funniest look I think a cashier has ever given me. Then we hit 120. She goes- "how did your organize this?" I tell her about the system but she says she doesnt have time to work with coupons. I tell her she does and that its easy! Savings hit $ 150!

It was a very fun day! I feel like a total dork sometimes and I love it! On your blog you had a list of things that you said about being obsessed- what made me really laugh is that I was going to post a list on my blog and it had like all the same things. Right down to the dream about grocery shopping (mine was a nightmare- I didnt have my coupons or wallet).

Last week I left the store with the biggest grin on my face, feeling so happy that I was able to buy things at such a deal. Anyway...sorry about the novel I have just written you. It is dumb but I could seriously talk about savings all day long! I love it! My picture is missing 3 other gallons of milk, 3 bags of shrimp and a turkey and 4 pkgs of cheese. There just was not room on the counter, and "baby" was hungry and done watching mom stare at groceries.

I bought
3 boxes rice krispies
9 boxes of jello
3 dh cake mixes
5 stove top stuffings
3 ragu sauces
2 5-pack mac and cheese
2 kraft mayo
1 box honey bunches
1 box honeycomb
2 bags chips
2 boxes fruit snacks
1 Lysol wipes
1 Lysol toilet bowl cleaner
1 box ice cream cones
6 bc frostings
4 boxes wheat thins
1 bag of bakers coconut
2 bags of marshmellows
3 pkgs of brown sugar
1 bottle ketchup
1 box ritz crackers
3 boxes of butter
6 frozen bags broccoli
3 tubs cool whip
3 cartons of ice cream
3 jars of peanut butter
4 bottles of vaseline lotion
2 deodrant
2 boxes of razors
1 pkg huggies
infant tylenol and nose drops
1 pair pantyhose
1 Land o Lakes tub of butter
4 blocks of cheese
3 2lb bags of shrimp (FREE) and
1 FREE turkey,
2 Free gallons of milk as well as
2 print outs for 10% off on next trips.

drum roll please...

spent: $125.37 ( went over budget due to MEGA SALE- definitely a VEGAS week for me)
BUT I SAVED (drum roll please)
Saved: $211.95
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! It makes me smile just thinking about it! Ok, thats enought rambling. Love ya,
Emily
P.S. we are starting to have a full pantry that can be shopped from.... I have found LOVE! hahahaha

Okay, I was in bed last night and quickly sat up and remembered that O.N was giving away a $75 off of $100 coupon this morning. My husband heard me and grabbed me and said "NO! You are not getting up in the middle of the night to COUPON!" I said "Yes, I am". Anyway I ended up missing the coupon. It was gone so fast. I was dissappointed and decided to skip Old Navy this week. There are still some awesome deals left on their site, so HAPPY HUNTING!

Hello Tori,
I attended one of your Levan classes with my sister-in-law. It was a great class, your enthusiasm is very contagious!
Until I took your class, I knew there were coupons in my paper, but I didn't know how to use them, thanks so much for helping me. I am coming out of my stock-up phase, and I can't believe how quickly it built up.
Today was my first 'Vegas Day', and I am so pleased with how it turned out! When the totals came in, my total out of pocket was $125, and I saved $223...I got free milk, free eggs, two free hams, a free roast, and 2# of free boneless chicken; and I have yet to count the mail in rebate for $10 of free ham (I looked for a $20 one, but they didn't have any, and I'll tell ya, that $10 lost savings is killing me!).
I hit Albertson's at 7:00 a.m. and ran into a couple of other 'couponers'...it was like a little party at the register, but I did feel bad for the cashier.
The only glitch in the trip was that I read on PYP that Albertson's was allowing multiple meat deals per transaction, but that wasn't the case at the Albertson's I went to, we had to split up our Kraft deals into $25 transactions. I am a fangirl of your blog, thanks for all the tips!

Frequently Asked Questions

Recently Asked Questions

Questions: Hi Tori! When do the new coupons come out on grocery smarts? Is it tomorrow? The first of the month? Thanks for all your help. Ronda
Answer: The online coupons reset themselves the first of the month

Question: I find myself paying more attention to "a good deal" than before I started using grocery smarts. However I have been using GS for just about a month now and I am not seeing much difference in my pantry. Am I buying the wrong stuff? Oh don’t get me wrong, I have 8 tubes of toothpaste in the bathroom that I only paid $2 total for and I think that is great! But it seems like as soon as I buy the sale items they are gone. What am I doing wrong?
Abbie
Answer: You’re not doing anything wrong. In a few weeks we will have what we like to call Vegas weeks and you'll end up with tons!!!! Then your pantry will be stocked. I think it also depends how large your family is and how much you are consuming. Be patient. I promise it will work out!

Question: I am not sure I understand the catalina offers. On the albertsons ad, if I buy $10 worth of the items that are greyed out I get $3 off my next trip? So I have to do multiple transactions right? Is the $10 before or after my coupons?
Abbie
Answer: The Catalina machine can be intimidating, but after you get use to it you’ll love it! The $10 is before coupons, so essentially you’ll figure out how much you’ll spend before coupons or the sale prices. As far as multiple transactions go you’ll need to read the weekly ads to figure out how much you can have off per transaction. So with this $3 off sale the ad will tell you up to $12. Then you’ll know you won’t want to spend more than$40 per transaction and then receive $12 off your purchase. If you have more than $40 you’ll want to do another transaction to continue get $3 off for every $10.

Question: Is there a place where I can put an item in and see where it is on sale for the best price?
Answer: Wow, that would be awesome, but prices change so often that would be impossible to keep track of. My suggestion is to just buy as much as what your looking for when the item goes on sale, so you aren’t constantly looking for the best price on an item. This also eliminates having to run from store to store to get the best prices.
Question: Ok so I have started doing this but I have been hearing that you can get me an awesome deal on papers? I would like to get at least four papers every Sunday. Can you help me out? Natalie
Answer: Yes, I can get you a deal on multiple Sunday papers. The cost depends on what Utah paper delivers to your area. Just e-mail me your location and will get your papers ordered ASAP!

Question: I attended one of your grocery smart meetings here and I recently received my papers on Sunday and organized my ads as you have said. I also used the link from your web site to see the grocery lists for the different stores. When I looked up Albertsons a lot of the deals require the "in-ad store coupon." What exactly is it meaning by this? Do they just come in their store ads in the Sunday paper (is it from previous Albertsons ads) or where else are these located? I didn't see that many "coupons" (there was the Mac and Cheese + three others on the front of the Albertsons ad on the right side.) in the Albertsons paper this Sunday, and they expire3/31/09. I didn't see any other ads or "coupons" for Albertsons. Did I miss them? I am excited to start this new program and see the expenses decrease.
Whitney
Answer: Yes, those Albertsons coupons are the "in-store coupons" that are located on the weekly ads themselves. Those coupons are only good for that week. Some of them end up being good deals and some don't 9the list on Grocery Smarts will rate them by the price with coupon), but remember that you can combine a store coupon with a manufactures coupon.

Tonight I am teaching a class in Levan and unfortunately this will be my last class down there for a long while. I will still be doing classes in Nephi and Mona that are on my calendar, but further than that it will be a while. If you haven't been able to attend one already this is your last chance. E-mail me if you don't already have the details for the class.

Just a quick note: my cell phone is now acting up. Go figure my computer and cell phone in one week. If you have a class on the calendar and I haven't been in touch I will be tonight after I take me phone in. Also please excuse my lack of response to your voice mails and e-mails. As soon as my electronics start behaving I will get back to ALL of you.

I've Seen Better Days

My computer is sick!!!!! My computer is in being repaired and won't be home until the end of the week. This means I am stuck with my old dinosaur computer. It is super slow and takes FOREVER to load. Because of my circumstances, posts and e-mails take me so long to do, so don't be disappointed in my lack of information this week. Please forgive me! I will still be hunting for good deals and will post them at once when I find them. Lets hope my computer has a fast and speedy recovery!

Newspapers

After you order your newspapers it takes a few weeks for the orders to be processed, so I promise they will be there soon, but if you are so excited and want to get started right away purchase your papers from a local newspaper stand until your subscrption starts, that way you're still getting those coupons! I know many of you readers live in rural areas where that can be close to impossible, so let me know if you really want them and I will go to my paper stand and pick up some extras you can purchase from me until your subscription starts! I promise those subscriptions will be there soon, but the newspapers can hardly keep up with our orders! They are processing them as quickly as they can!

Hi Readers!
Last night was a VERY successful grocery shopping trip. A host came with me along with a couple friends. We had a ton of fun! We looked like a little train walking up and down the aisles. I really enjoyed the company!
First we headed to Smiths. I am going to tell you how I made out and then I'll tell you how my friends made out when they send me their pictures!

At Smith's I walked away with
10 packages of American Beauty Pasta (long spaghetti and macaroni noodles)
10 bottles of Kens Salad Dressing
1 32 oz Bag shredded cheese
2 Gallons of milk
1.5 lbs green grapes
1.12 oz Asparagus
1.48 lbs yellow onions
4 green bell peppers
1 red bell pepper
1 package beef jerky
3 Boxes Kellogg's Mini wheat bites, blueberry, cinnamon, and maple flavors
7 boxes Nature Valley Granola bars
4 Colgate toothbrushes
2 bags Cheetos puffs
2 bags Frito honey BBQ chips
1 bag chili cheese Frito's
1 bag Doritos

Then I did head over to Albertson's after. I hardly ever do two stores, but I couldn't leave behind such a good sale
4 boxes Planters nut bars
2 box wheat thins
1 box chicken in biscuit crackers
4 California Pizza Kitchen personal pizzas
3 Kraft Pasta salads
1 Kraft salad dressing
1 package 18 taco shells
2 packages Oreo cookies
1 box already cooked bacon
1 Oscar Meyer deli shaved lunch meat
1 100 sq feet plastic wrap
2 bags Lays potato chips
1 Sara lee cheesecake
1 tub land o lakes butter
4 bags birds eye fresh steamer vegetables
2 packages hot dogs
1 loaf french bread
1 container cinnamon rolls
Totals
Total spent at Albertsons 23.09
Total Spent at Smiths 52.31
Grand Total $75.40
Saved $159.34
Savings of 68%
85 items purchased
.88 cents an item

I brought home the groceries, set them on the counter, called my husband over, asked him what he thought I spent and then he proceeded to tell me he already knew, so I asked how. He said the exact total I spent and said he checked online at our bank account. Then he said I was surprised you went over budget before you came home and now that I've seen what you bought I think you should go back and spend MORE! I was so excited to hear him say that. This week I bought a lot of stuff to use in his lunches and a lot of stuff we have really been needing, like pasta. I did go over budget a little, but I figure as long as I don't go over $200 for the month I'll be happy!
Here were a couple tips
If you buy 10 participating products the $5 discount comes of your purchase instantly!!!! That was so nice. I kept expecting the $5 off coupon to print out and it never did and then I saw it came off my receipt I was thrilled. Then I realized you could do up to 30 products and receive $15 off your total instantly. So Smith's will honor up to 30 items and then if you had more than 30 you would have to do another group or transaction to get the discount! Awesome huh! You saw the savings drop right there! The ad states that very clearly too.

Both stores I went to last night were stocked well

Never be afraid to question your bill total. At Albertson's last night my Kraft discount wasn't applied and I asked why. The checker wasn't sure so he called over the manager. The manager explained to me that the computer only recognized the sale if I grouped it by either 2 for $5 groups or 2 for $6 groups. I said the ad doesn't state that any where and he said I was right and they had to manually apply my discount. He said it had happened to several people and they couldn't figure out how to fix the computers to the discount would apply automatically.

Always have at least an estimate of what you expect your bill to be in case something like that happens. They were super nice about it and were happy to give me the discount, I just had to tell them. It saved me $10 off my bill to question the sale ad. In all the times I have been shopping this is the first time this has happened, but just be aware and never afraid to question something. You're the customer.

I love the website Pinching your Pennies. It is a forum where people all over Utah share great deals they have found. One thread compares Costco prices for us. I love seeing prices of things there just so I can get an idea of what I am saving. For anyone interested here is the link to the list. While you're there check out PYP (pinching your pennies)!

Here is Monday Nights Free Redbox Code. Enjoy!

What to do after you get all those coupons in the paper

I have had a few readers ask me what to do after they get all those coupons and organize them.

You won't use them all that week. You'll use the coupons when the items go on sale at the store. The coupons in the booklets expire about 5 months after you get them. So hold on to them until then.

Here is a typical weekly shopping experience for me. I log in to Grocery Smarts-link on the right side- and click the store I want to shop at. I typically do this Wednesday morning because I like to shop at Albertson's and their ads run from Wednesday at 6 am to Tuesday at 11pm. I go through the list and figure out what items are 4-5 stars. I look in the last column on the left, figure out what coupons to clip, finish making my list, print the list, clip the coupons it tells me to, and head to the grocery store. I know it sounds so simple and that's because it really is! Grocery Smarts makes it so easy for us busy moms on a budget.

If you have more detailed questions feel free to email us at couponingforautism@gmail.com

Diaper Coupons

Ok, so online here you can print $5 off and $3 off Huggies Diapers Coupons here or click the grocery smarts link on the side of this page and click on printable coupons group a. (Don't forget you can print each coupon twice) After some debate as to where the best place to use them at I have come up with the places I think are best.

Walgreens this week has their diapers on sale for $10.99 and if you spend $25 in participating products you'll receive $10 in register rewards!
I love Walgreens, but chances are I didn't get there yesterday when the sale started, so they are probably gone.

Diapers.com also has a great deal too and they are always in stock. You can mail your coupons in (instructions on their web site) and they'll apply it to your account. You can use various promo codes to receive $10 off (promo code I used, mom6) and then there is a rebate form here you can mail in to parents magazine for $14.97. They also give you free shipping if you spend $50. I also had another reader tell me that she used cashbaq for the first time and they credited her account $5 and 1% of the purchase prices. This sounds like a pretty great deal to me, but some work involved.

I also saw in Targets ad this week that their boxes of Huggies diapers were on sale for 29.99 and they had wipes in them and if you buy 2 boxes you get a $10 gift card. I am not sure if they'll accept our printable coupons because they say they have to be the gentle care brand and Target has snug and dry on sale.

Which ever way you chose to buy your diapers a $5 off coupon makes a big difference. With our coupons diapers turn out to be a pretty good deal this week! I'd post exactly how to get the best deal and how much it costs per a diaper, but every store has their own policies and every size of diapers has a different diaper count in the box. Comment if you find a great deal and let us know!
