Some Printing Tips:

The lists
When I post the preview lists, it isn't important to print the actual list right then. If you end up printing the preview list you'll have to print off the entire list which can sometimes end up being 20-30 pages long!!!! If you wait to print the list off from Grocery Smarts you can customize your own list! Just click the start button in the upper right hand corner, select which items you need, then go back up by the start button and click the shrink button. It will condense your list to just the items you want to purchase. Then hit print. Most of the time I am only buying an 1/8 of the products on the list, so my list ends up being 1/2 page to a page long.

The IPS
The one thing I do recommend printing when I post the preview lists are the online coupons and here are some reasons why:

  • Manufactures set limits on the amounts of coupons printed. When the limit is reached they pull their coupons off. That means occasionally you will go the print a coupon and it will be gone unless you printed it off at the beginning.

  • This is even more important toward the end of a month. Coupons group A-C are reset at the first of the month, so when the coupons today were posted they may be near the end of their count.

  • Sometimes manufactures will reset their coupons, but don't count on it. Just consider yourself lucky if they do.

  • I know some people are having problems with IPS. I wish I could help out in that area, but I am not tech savvy enough. I have heard that switching browsers can help. Example: On Internet Explorer and they won't print try Fire Fox or vice virsa. Another great resource is pinching your pennies. They have an entire forum to troubleshooting your IPS.

Questions I ALWAYS get about IPS
Some questions to commonly asked IP questions

  • "Are IP'S worth it? It seems like a lot of paper and ink to be wasting." My answer is it depends. I think after you have a couple months worth of newspaper coupons its hit and miss. I only print ones of that make things close to FREE or if it is something I really like or know I will need. You'll never catch me printing of cereal coupons or toothpaste coupons. That is because I have DOZENS of them from my newspaper. Now if you are staring out and only have a few coupons from the paper on the list then I definitely recommend using IPS to maximize your savings. My sister in law started out and only had a weeks worth of coupons, but wanted to start saving right away, so she maximized her coupons by using IPS. She told me her husband was frustrated by all the paper in ink she was using, but after she shopped she had saved over $50. That paper and ink WAY over paid for itself. IP'S are a great way of subsidizing newspaper coupons, but not a great substitute! Newspaper coupons will benefit you way more in the the long end.

  • "How long do IP'S last". IPS have expiration dates on them the same way other coupons do. Most times they expire WAY faster than the ones in the paper. That's why I only print the ones off from the list that week. Otherwise they tend to expire before I have a chance to use them.

  • "Can we print them off in black and white?" It depends on your store. Some stores will take black and white, some will not. Be sure to ask if you are planning on trying black and white.

  • Do all stores take IP's and the answer is no. Not all stores do take IPS. Albertsons and Smiths DO! My suggestion with other stores is call ahead and ask if you are planning on using them on your shopping trip.
Also don't forget the two IP's per HOUSEHOLD rule!
Have fun printing!

Coupons in Sunday's Paper

Sunday, May 24, 2009 | | 3 comments
Good Morning! Don't forget that today is a holiday weekend and there are no manufactures coupons in the paper!

Since I had a break from my normal coupon organizing and listing I thought I would take a minute and tell you all how much I appreciate you. As most of you know I started my blog as a hobby and have continued it that way. I never expected it to make me any "income" whatsoever and I plan on keeping it that way! My intentions were just to inform people that there is an alternative way to shop and save LOADS of money.

All my readers have made this blog SOOO much fun to run. Your comments are always to positive and supportive of me. I cannot express how grateful I am for each of my readers. Thank you so much for helping me keep this blog going. It is because of your comments and success stories I stay motivated enough to update this daily.

That reminds me, I have had a lack of posts this weekend for various reasons, one its a holiday, two I haven't been feeling well, and third my parents came into town to celebrate my birthday with me and my family! So I promise I will make it up to you next week with lots of extra posts.

Enjoy your weekend! I know I will!

Get Paid on your Birthday for Just Being YOU!

Yes, I know! I LOVE birthdays! I love everything about that special day, but now that I have been using coupons I LOVE it even more. My birthday is this weekend and I cannot believe the things retail places and even restaurants give away for your birthday. Here are just some of the things I have received the last couple days for my upcoming birthday! Isn't it great to get paid for just being YOU!
*Updated info with the things I have received after joining their e-clubs! A piece of advice too, I signed up intentionally for my B-Day which is tomorrow and a lot of these coupons will expire before I will have a chance to use them. Try and avoid signing up near your birthday, otherwise both coupons they send you, one for B-day, one for signing-up, will expire close to one another!

Children's Place gives you 15% off your entire purchase, on yours and your children's birthdays!

Tucanos (MY FAV) gives you a coupon for a FREE meal when you purchase another. We usually go at lunch time. Their menu is half the price if you go at lunch instead of during dinner hours! That means my husband and I can eat for $12.95!

Arby's gives you a free milk shake with the purchase of ANY sandwich

Chili's gives you a free molten cake dessert with the purchase on any entree. This will make a super cheap dinner when I combine my coupon with my one in Sunday's paper for $5 off an entree.

Del Taco gives you a FREE milk shake

Mimi Cafe gives you a $10 off coupon when you spend $20 or more.

Some other places I found, but didn't receive myself..YET!

Where can I find the Coupons?

I received an interesting question about coupons the other day!

Q: I don't want to get a newspaper subscription, so where else can I get the coupons in the paper?

A: You have a couple options.
  • First you could ask your friends and neighbors for their coupons from their Sunday newspapers. I did this for a while myself. I use to take my in-laws, but they caught on fast to what I was doing and started using them. My neighbors caught on as well. Needless to say ALL of us receive multiple papers on Sundays. I also found that a lot of people cut out one or two "high valued" coupons out of the inserts. The $2.50 off any package of electrosol dish washing tablets is ALWAYS missing LOL! I also hated the hassle of having to drive around and collect the coupons everyone had saved for me.
  • Second, I had absolutely no idea that you could buy coupons online until a girl in one of my classes told me she bought hers from ebay. I asked how much she paid and she quickly responded "$3.00" an insert plus S&H! I about cracked up laughing because the paper down at the gas station is $2.00!!! After she told me about this I started doing some research about it. I kept thinking I am in the wrong business if I can SELL my coupons. I found that it is uncommon for an entire insert to go on sale and it is in no way a money maker. I only found that people will sell their individual coupons they are NOT using. A great example is someone who doesn't have pets, sells their pet coupons, or someone who doesn't have a baby sells the diaper coupons, but don't plan on buying all the coupons from SS 3/15. That's the other problem I saw with this was. How would I know what insert they came from and what was the date? When grocery smarts list told me to use the tree top juice coupon from RP 4/18, I would have to figure out where all the clipped coupons that e-bay sent me needed to go to match the inserts.
  • The last place I know you can get them is in trading forums, but again, you are not going to be getting entire coupon inserts. Only those coupons that other people won't be using, but again don't plan on being able to trade for the "valuable" coupons every body will use. That totally eliminates you from being able to get those "free items". Just use trading forums to get more of a coupon.

So bottom line here is that you need to breakdown and just get a paper subscription to get those coupons. My subscription a month way out weighs the cost I save on groceries. My husband always says "it like a drop in the bucket compared to what we are saving and getting for our food storage."

I remember when I first started I wanted to avoid that subscription cost so badly (I know I am so cheap) that I knew where people recycled their Sunday papers in my area and I actually got into the recycling dumpster and was "digging" around trying to find inserts! I know, totally insane. You wouldn't believe the looks I received. I tried going in the night, so people wouldn't see me, but one time a man was walking his dog and he was actually frightened when he saw me at first. I made up some sorry excuse like I had accidentally thrown away a check with my paper LOL! At that point I knew I was pathetic. I would dig and dig and never find an entire insert!!! I would go home upset and discouraged. My husband was always so disgusted with me when I got home, he would say "YOU STINK! JUST BUY THE SUBSCRIPTION". LOL. I still remember that and smile.

After I broke down and got my subscription I learned their are some definite positives to being a subscriber. You can put your paper on hold when you go on vacation or if an insert is missing you call the paper and they bring it to you. I hated going to the gas station, buying a paper and getting home and discovering it had been pulled out by someone! Yes, I know its called stealing! Most of us would say that was common sense, but I have noticed people don't realize that people actually WANT their coupons! That was so frustrating! I also discovered that I would have to wake up early to make sure I would even get a paper from the stand. Most times they are gone before 9am. As a subscriber you just go out to your drive-way and pick up your papers! It's the best. And the absolute best part is that by being a subsriber you save A LOT of money by not going down and buying the papers at the stand. Being a subscriber you get a BETTER rate. If you aren't a subsriber and are looking to become one, just give me a call so I can get you a great rate!

I hope this LONG post answered that question.

The Value of Coupons

Load all you groceries onto the conveyor belt! The checker tells you the total and you want to die! I had one girl tell me her total came to $600.00 and she told the checker that if she didn't get it under $200 she was walking away! I would have done the same! Next give them your preferred savings/fresh values shopping card. A LOT of money will come off your total! Then you hand over your "valuable coupons"! Did you know that coupons are actually considered a payment method! Coupons are just like cash and should be treated like that! If you click here on my monthly report card page you can see that coupons have saved ME over $1070 in the last 3 months! I know incredible! Coupon are like a currency all on their own. I LOVE IT! I don't consider my self obsessed or paranoid about coupons I just consider myself a stay at home mom who should be trying to find ways to help my family use money other places. With the amount of money coupons have saved me, it pays for me to be a stay at home mom! The little bit of extra work clipping those coupons before I go shopping saves me TONS! By the way the girl got her total to a little over $200 and the checker asked her, "Did you want to put some stuff back?" The girl chuckled and said, "No! It's fine".

Did you Know?

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 | | 6 comments
Yesterday I was checking out at the grocery store and there was a "newbie" in front of me.
(We have all been there, nervous, trying to make sure things really ring up and the right price and trying to be as nice to the checker as possible.)
She seemed flustered and out of sorts, so I began helping her. Her total came to an amazing price, then she handed over her coupons. I was shocked at how many rules she asked the checker to break and how many "illegal" moves she tried pulling out! As she left and I started checking out, my checker proceeded to tell how awful the last few day had been at the store because people were asking the checkers to do all kinds of CRAZY things.
I couldn't help, but feel like I wish everyone knew how good this really is without having to "cheat" the system.
I want to make sure that all my readers are well educated of the "coupon" rules, so stores will be relieved not afraid when you say your from Grocery Smarts!
I also want people to know that as long as we do follow the rules, we wont run into issues, where stores will quit taking Internet printables, coupons, limiting transactions, or even be afraid of Grocery Smarts gals!
So ..... Did you Know?
  • Photo coping coupons is illegal- Stores are paid face value plus .8 cents per coupon. If you photocopy them, they will not be reimbursed for them. That is considered stealing or coupon fraud.
  • You can only print 2 IPs (internet printables) per computer or HOUSEHOLD! Most grocery stores are very aware of the 2 per household rule and will limit you to 2. That is for their own protection. They need to make sure that they are reimbursed for them.
  • There are more grocery stores than Albertsons? LOL. I know a lot if people have been e-mailing about the lack of items left on the shelves at Albies. Don't panic, you can take your ad and go to Walmart where they will price match the item. Just make sure you have the ad with you!
  • If a store is out of an item they will issue you a rain check for the sale price and you can use your coupons with it, as long as they don't expire, next time you go shopping!
  • Everything goes on sale AGAIN! No sale is the BEST sale ever. I promise it will go on sale again
  • It isn't nice to harass the checkers and ask them to "bend" rules for you, no matter how nice, or how much you flirt with them!
  • We need to follow the coupons rules. Don't try and use it after its expired, or double it when it says not to
  • If a coupon says only 3 per family, per shopping trip---follow that rule.. You will end up holding up the lines, getting more items that someone else who follows the rules could be getting or even making stores second guess their decision to let people use coupons!
  • It is okay to help a "newbie"
  • You are still saving a TON of money, even though you didn't get that ONE free item! LOL
  • That if we follow the rules and continue to not "abuse" the system" this will keep working and we will be able to keep saving money on groceries!
  • It helps to be organized before you get to the check out. Take an extra minuet and make sure your on budget and have things in the order you want them

Most of all HAVE FUN shopping and keep sending me in all your great pictures with your savings and out of pocket costs! Keep up the savings guys! I am so proud of my "She Shops Smart" readers!

Old Navy Weekly Hunt

Thursday, May 14, 2009 | | 2 comments

Well, I just got on to post a reminder about tonight's hunt and I checked the web page and the coupons had already changed over!!! I totally missed them. There was another coupon for $60 off a $100 and another great one for $45 off a $100 purchase. Did anyone remember and get a coupon tonight? I guess I will get a good night rest and not be paranoid about "missing" it this week!

Weekly Show and Tell+some

Yesterday I did my weekly shopping trip and made out great!
8 Garnier Fructis Products
11 Electrosol Tablets (box of 20 each) (That should last me FOREVER)
1 case of Water (I am really trying to build my water supply in my food storage!!!!)
1 Maybeline Mascara
1 Box of Wheat Thins
1 Cottonelle Toilet paper pack
1 Progresso chicken broth
4 Bisquick pancake mixes
2 Progresso Bread crumbs
1 Box Coco Puffs
2 4 packs of Yoplait Yogurt
2 packs Philadelphia Cream Cheeses

Total Spent $43.80
Saved $71.91

So for this show and tell I want to show you how important it is to be on the "LOOK OUT" for coupons at the store. I didn't plan on purchasing the Garnier Fructis products at $1.99, but when I got there there were $1.00 coupon tear pads! That made each product .99! A GREAT deal! As I also walked around I was able to spot some more amazing savings!

People always ask me. "Where do you find these things?", and honestly my answer is EVERYWHERE! I am just constantly on the "LOOK OUT" for good coupons. Yesterday I managed to find a $2.00 off coupon when you bought two bags of Lays Potato chips, a free Fuze when I bought a multi pack, a $1.00 off Fuze multi pack coupon, a $10.00 rebate when you buy 2 bags of charcoal and $10.00 worth of meat products, $3.00 off any cooler (via mail in), $2.00 of Nivea body wash, and $1.00 of Bayer aspirin (both on sale at Walgreen's!). I do NOT pull of coupons that are on the products themselves-ONLY tear pads or loose coupons. Don't steal coupons from products that are for instant redemption!
The last couple weeks I also managed to find these coupons, $1.25 off 3 Philadelphia cream cheeses (I need to use it this week! That would make a great deal on cream cheese at Albie's), .50 cents of crystal light (always on sale) and .50 of cheese when you buy Sara Lee bread!)
I then proceeded to check out and look what was there!!!! Someone had left these coupons and the checker had SAVED them for me!!! How nice was that! The checker knew I came on Wednesdays and when the customer who received them didn't want them, the checker put them aside for me!!! There are 4 coupons for $5 off a $40 purchase!!! Easy for me to do!
I also wanted to share with you how sometimes it pays to sign up for those silly trial offers or mailing lists. The last week this is all I received in the mail, not including my e-mail box!
1 Playtex bottle
25.00 of a 4 course dinner at the Melting Pot (My B-day is coming up-hint hint honey)
B1G1 free smoothie
A free chili cheese dog with the purchase of one at Weinershnitzle
Free Country Bobs BBQ sauce (like I need any more after last week!)
$2.00 of Gillette Fusion shampoo
$1.00 of Jergen's Lotion
A free Sample of lotion
$5 off at Famous Footwear
Free Box of Kashi frozen waffles
5 coupons for $1.50 off one box of waffles from Kashi (Thank you Vocal Point)
A free sample of Mini Wheats (Thank you to Vocal Point)
A B1G1 free box of Mini Wheat's
5 coupons for $1.00 off one box of Mini Wheats
$5.00 of a Mimi's Cafe breakfast-took a survey last time I went
And I took a picture of my $17.98 Unilever rebate check
Wow! I am not sure I can even use all that before it expires! Again I am always on the "LOOK OUT" for savings
Also be aware the rewards programs at local store pay off too! Babies R Us always sends my valuable coupons in the mail, Staples gives me cash back and great rebates with their rewards programs, Paradise Bakery and Cafe adds up my points so eventually I can get a free meal after I get so many points, and there are SO many other programs! Take advantage and make sure you use them!!!!
After I started using Grocery Smarts, my whole perspective on "buying things" changed. I hate to buy something without a coupon or reward system, I am always keeping track of what a "good price" is and I am always finding great savings! I love that Grocery Smarts taught me the value of my money! My lifestyle has completely changed for the better! I love this new way of shopping that I have incorporated in my daily living!'
Now that you guys have been using Grocery Smarts what are some of the things you have found or discovered.

Unilever Ham/Turkey Rebate

I opened up my mailbox today and there was my Unilever rebate check! It was $17.98!!!! As if getting free meat that week wasn't good enough, they ended up paying me for it!!!! Oh what would I do without Grocery Smarts and all my wonderful coupons!

Mac and Cheese

Last week I bought tons of Mac and Cheese and lots of BBQ sauce, but now I need to find ways to use it!!! What are some recipes you guys have using either of those ingredients?

Sad News!

Dear redbox customer,

The word is out that you can take home new release DVDs for only a $1 per night from the big red box. We know you know, because you've saved that dollar as part of redbox' Free Movie Mondays promotion, which is ending after May 11.

However, since so many of us could use an extra buck these days, redbox is going to keep the free flicks coming once a month throughout the summer.

Beginning June 1, redbox will send a free movie code to your phone on the first Monday of the month as a thank you for using redbox.

So start thinking about what you are going to do with those 3 extra dollars this summer – pool noodle... 6 piece McNuggets® and honey... 64 oz cherry icie... And we'll keep thinking up new ways to delight you – Hollywood's newest releases, online reservations, movie reviews, witty remarks... seriously, it's endless.

Sad! Here is the last code!

Okay, I'll admit it I was a total lameo and stayed up tonight to score an Old Navy Coupon! The best they had this week was $60 off $100. I was on there right when it started. I never could catch that flying bird. He had a towel or swimsuit of some sort. I am assuming that was the $60 off $100 coupon. I did manage to get a $45 of $100 coupon when the dolphin was swimming in the background! It's not great, but I'll take it. I think if you catch the crab there is a coupon, or if you pop the lil boys water wings a coupons pops up too. I am bound and determined to snag a good one next week....until then I'll be happy with what I was able to get! Now I have GOT to go to bed!

Old Navy Update!

Oh wow we are close guys!

Old Navy Tonight

Thursday, May 7, 2009 | | 2 comments
Don't forget that sometime between tonight and tomorrow morning Old Navy weekly hunt starts! Old Navy also has some new rules for the coupon hunt.

This week at OldNavyWeekly.com, we’ll have another fabulous coupon to hide, $60 off $100 purchase. We’ll also be releasing the coupons at different times like last week, so more of you have the chance at scoring one of these fabulous offers.
In other exciting news: we’ll be introducing a “retrieve coupon” button that will let you resend a coupon to your inbox if you should lose it!
In order for our new “retrieve coupon” button to track your findings, you’ll be asked to enter your email address when you discover your first coupon. Entering your address reserves your coupon while you hunt for a better one. Each email address will be allowed one coupon per week (this will also give more of you a chance at the $$ coupons)—so make sure you do some serious snooping to find the best deal before hitting “Make Coupon.” Once you’ve clicked the button, that fabulous deal is yours for the week!"

Good Luck! If your up and you find a coupon comment on it's location! I know I'll be up tonight!
