Produce and Food Co-Op in Utah

Have you heard of Food and Produce Co-Ops? They are groups that use collective buying power of all their participants to purchase at up to 50% below retail value!!! I was amazed when I heard that it was even possible to save 50% on produce (and not have to grow it myself to save that much). With coupons, I was savings lots at the grocery store on the other items we needed but we eat a TON of fruit and veggies at my house. Due to produce not having coupons (with rare exception) that part of our bill never has changed much. So, when I heard about this I was so excited. There are lots of local farms in the state that run in co-op form. Some vary with certain amounts of hours to be given as volunteer time and amounts of pick up locations. The one that my own family has used is called Bountiful Baskets. They have locations all over the state. It currently cost $15.00 for a basket that is LOADED with fruits and veggies. I generally had a produce bill of $25 or more, and even with that total I was not bringing home the same large amount as a basket is from this site is full of. So, if your looking to cut costs on more than just the coupon items a Co-op can be a great way to do it. Because they are run by volunteers they can also be a great way to meet new friends who enjoy feeding their families lots of fresh stuff! Some co-ops also offer grocery items and meat and bread.

There is another co-op I have had friends work with called the Community Food Co-Op of Utah. They have also had great experiences and loved being able to purchase great food for their families for so much less.

To find a local farm near you there is a great site called LocalHarvest.net.

Welcome to our new web page!

She Shops Smart was started in February of 2009. More than a year later, after couponing our way out of debt Emily and I had a conversation where we shared with each other how tired we were. We had become exhausted with the idea of blogging, teaching coupon classes 4-5 times a week and being mothers and wives. We took a short blogging break only to realize how much we loved our blog (our 4th child), but we knew we needed to make a change so we could really enjoy what we were doing.

At the beginning of the year my oldest son was diagnosed with Autism. I quickly found that there was going to be so much to learn in order to help him. This spurred new goals for me, which included further coupon use in order to afford the costly treatments ($1800 A MONTH!) that insurance would not cover, as well as much research on the topic. We also had to change our families diet dramatically to meet his special nutritional needs.

Emily has always had a serious interest in saving money, nutritious eating, and healthy living. Many times she found that coupons seemed to be used to purchase processed and junk foods and this is not what she wanted to focus on purchasing when there are coupons available for all different kinds of products. Emily really enjoys finding coupons and ways to save money on the "nutritious stuff" and preparing meals that she knows are good for her family.

We combined our passions and Couponing for Autism and Healthy Families was born. This new website/blog is everything we could have ever envisioned. We are so excited for this new coupon journey we are embarking on. We are still the same girls sharing with you ways to save money for what may seem impossible, but just on our new web site!
