Be Friendly with your Checker ,Tips to Making Checking out Simple

When I teach classes the most common concern I get is what the checkout process will be. People are always worried that the grocery stores will be mad at them for using coupons. Grocery stores actually like couponers (shock and surprise) because they get paid face value plus .8 cents per coupon. We make them some money!

However, when you check out with coupons there can be scary experiences. I tell people it isn't a reflection of the store because they do want your business, but rather a result of the person checking you out. People are human and can have good and bad days, but I have found that the nicer I am to my checkers and the store employees the better experiences I have! I typically shop at the same couple stores each week. I go in so often all the checkers know me by name and many of them have nick named me "the coupon gal". When I check out I try to be as friendly and courtesy as I can. I ask them how their day has been, how they are doing and in general just make small talk. In the process of being kind I could walk into the store with you and tell you the employees names, how many kids they have, and how closely they check coupons when you check out (you know some just scan them in, and others check every detail, are they expired, the right size etc.).

In the process of being kind to the employees they have gone above and beyond for ME. They never give me a hard time about requesting rain checks on the first day, asking if something is out and if they have more in the back, or asking when the restock their shelves. A lot of times they will give me a heads up about upcoming sales, other catalina offers and the less busy times to go shopping.

Emily had made a post about our price matching at Walmart at the beginning of the week. I am glad she made the post instead of me, because she was much more positive about our experience than I would have been. We had a checker that just wouldn't trust a word we were saying. They tried over and over to catch us in some coupon fib, and they just grew more angry as they saw we were doing things the right way (Thank you readers for all your comments. I feel much more comfortable about trying it again). I finished checking out and was exhausted. Emily followed up behind me and she broke that checker. She started by asking them how their day was, if they had tried some of the products she was buying and by the end of Emily's check out they were on friendly terms. I couldn't believe how the checkers mood had shifted just from Emily being kind and interested.

There have been several of you that have shared similar experiences with me. You have made friends with unlikely checkers who appeared nasty at the beginning of your shopping trips, but were laughing with you when you said goodbye.

Checkers do need to be on guard. There are couponers out there that do things the "wrong" way. Checkers have to be on the lookout for photocopied coupons, coupon usage with expired dates, and coupons with dates cut off and even couponers that try to scan additional coupons in the self checkout aisle. Can you blame them for being weary of coupon usage. If you keep doing it the "right" way your checker will know you do things honestly and will quit questioning your integrity. Until then if they question a coupon your using be calm, patient and friendly with them.

The moral of the story use coupons the "right" way and be friendly with your checkers. It will make all the difference.

Have any of you had similar experience with your local checkers or advice to newbies checking out?

Utah's Fry Sauce, Pepsi Ketchup Chicken, and more Recipes using Ketchup

This week at Albertsons they have their Hunt's ketchup 24 oz. size on sale for .60! Did you know that ketchup is used in over 97% of American households!

"Nearly everyone likes ketchup, even if what they like to put it on seems odd-Nixon covered his cottage cheese with it, the Japanese eat it on rice, and one ice cream manufacturer allegedly once tried a ketchup ice cream."

I must admit I have never used ketchup for any one those things, but here are some recipes that do call for ketchup that I think are yummy!

Favorite Meatloaf
What You Need!
1 large onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup KRAFT Light Zesty Italian Dressing
2 lb. extra-lean ground beef
3/4 cup ketchup, divided
1 pkg. (6 oz.) STOVE TOP Stuffing Mix for Chicken
1 cup water
2 egg whites
1/2 cup KRAFT 2% Milk Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Make It!
HEAT oven to 375°F.
COOK onions in dressing in skillet on medium heat 8 to 10 min. or until golden brown, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; cool slightly.
MIX meat, onions, 1/4 cup ketchup, stuffing mix, water and egg whites. Shape into 10x5-inch loaf in 13x9-inch baking dish; cover with remaining ketchup.
BAKE 55 min. to 1 hour or until done (160°F). Sprinkle with cheese; bake 2 min. or until melted.
Click here to see the recipe

My family begs me to make this recipe ALL the time. It is super good. I saw it on GTU a couple years ago when they cooked it in a dutch oven, but I adjusted it to cook in my crock pot.
Pepsi Ketchup ChickenYou'll need:
4 chicken breasts
1 16 ounce bottle of Pepsi
1 24 ounce bottle of Ketchup
salt & pepper
1 large purple onion
2 green peppers
2 red peppers
2 yellow/orange peppers (if desired)
Make it:
Cut up your vegetables and meat. Place half of the vegetables in a layer on the bottom and sprinkle with salt & pepper. Place the chicken on top of the vegetables in the oven and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Pour the ketchup and the Pepsi on top of this layer. Place the other half of the vegetables on top of the chicken.
Slow cook in the crock pot.
I serve it with rice and homemade rolls.
Occasionally if the sauce looks to runny I will thicken it with a cornstarch paste (4 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with cold water) and let it sit for 30 min.

Sassy Sloppy Joes You'll need:
1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1/3 cup chopped celery stalk
1/3 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/3 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon red pepper sauce
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Make it!
1. Cook beef and onion in 10-inch skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is brown; drain. Stir in remaining ingredients except buns.
2. Cover and cook over low heat 10 to 15 minutes or just until vegetables are tender. Fill buns with mixture.

Make some homemade french fries and serve it with the infamous Utah "fry sauce".
I like to mix 1 part ranch dressing to one part ketchup, but other people like mixing it with 1 part ketchup to one part mayonnaise.

How do you like to use your ketchup???

Freezing Corn Utah

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 | | 4 comments
I mentioned to you yesterday that I was given more fruits and vegetables than I knew what to do with. Instead of being overwhelmed I am taking it one day at a time. Yesterday was corn, today is jam.

I counted over 60 ears of corn that I would need to husk, cut the corn off of, and then seal up.

First all you need to do is husk the corn, then rinse it off to make sure you get all those strings off the corn. You do not need to boil, blanch or cook anything! Then cut the corn off the cob. I started using a paring knife, but had better success with a serrated knife.
I just put mine into a bowl like this one. Then all I did was scoop out 6 one cups of corn into gallon sized freezer bags (the sale at Albertson's last week helped me pick up my Ziploc bags for a great deal!)

About an hour and half later I was done and had to start the clean up process. I did everything outside and would highly recommend that. It did get a little messy, although most of the mess was created by my kids that took advantage of my lack of supervision! Note to self* perform tasks like this while children are sleeping!

After all was said and done I kept asking myself if it had been worth it. I had to remind myself that yes, my time is as important as my money, but it's also good to not have the attitude that I'll just pay the money. It was FREE corn that was given to me. I picked it myself and I knew it was a super healthy option for my family. I also know that times are tough and could get tougher. I am grateful that my family has what we need now, but if something were to happen I would also be grateful that I had taken this time to plan for the worst.

Time to price match?

My time is as important as my money. So, I have had a dilemma, when there are weeks that there are multiple items at multiple stores. This last week Tori and I decided we would do the price matching game at Walmart. Everything went great but I want to give some tips.

TAKE YOUR ADS-- this is how the price matching system is able to work- they want to see the price in the other stores ads. There are some sales such as 10 for 10 that they will not price match. Click here to read the Walmart store policy.

When we were walking the rows the thing that I found funny was that I was looking for the sale tags. When I am at the store that has the item on sale it is usually marked for me. This makes finding the right sale item super easy. While price matching I was checking my list multiple times per item to get the right item. This is something that you want to be doing no matter what store you are at to make sure your coupon works with the product (and is what makes the Grocery Smarts lists so nice). What made me laugh is that I realized there is a "lazy" part of me does enjoy the little sale tag helpers that I get at other stores though.

The other difference being that some sale items that I know would have been gone at other stores were still sitting on the shelves- because they are not on sale at walmart- but would be after price matching.

BE CAREFUL when finding the right size! Stores offer different sizes of products. Some stores might carry a medium size bottle or box while another only the large or small. This is one difference that I ran into while trying to price match. The size of item that was on sale at another store was not necessarily the size that Walmart stocked. In order for the coupon to be valid make sure you are buying the right size.

and last but NOT least. This is the most important part of ALL!

LEAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO CHECK OUT. I dont think I was planning on it taking very long. I am used to just handing over the coupons at the store I pick to shop at that week. When you price match they will need you to show them the item in the other stores ad and then they manually over ride the computer to give you that price. I had a full cart of items and it took me 23 minutes to CHECK OUT. I did get all the deals at one store though where it would have taken me probably even longer to run around to the seperate stores collecting the deals.
Here is a picture of what I ended up coming home with. I went over my budget this week. Summer has been kind of crazy and due to family vacations I have missed some weeks of sale shopping so we have run out of a few items that we normally have in our s.p. I would like to be able to say that I NEVER EVER buy something at regular price BUT I would be lying if I did. If there is something that my family needs, or I REALLY REALLY want I buy it. So, in the picture there are some items that were not fantastic buys (such as baby formula or beef jerky) that I purchase any way. I figure that I am generally getting every thing else for SOO cheap that its ok to pay full retail once every rare while. I will be honest with you-- I woke up early saturday morning to go shopping. I left my house in a MESS! So, the pictures are taken at an odd angle so you dont have to see the messy kitchen that surrounded this pile of groceries.

What I came home with:
1 bag tyson chicken nuggets
1 bag tyson honey chicken
8 boxes nature valley granola bars
8 bags of quaker quakes
8 boxes of assorted sizes Ziploc Bags
1 bag beef jerky
1 large can baby formula
1 jar of strawberry jelly
Totinos Pizza Rolls
2 boxes of Go-Gurt
2 boxes BC fruit snacks
1 pkg Hefty cups
1 pgk Hefty plates 4 boxes of Kleenex
1 nail polish
1 shamp/conditioner with free styling product
1 almay makeup
2 boxes of apple cinnamon cheerios
1 Bag tostitos chips
1 tostitos Salsa
1 tostitos spinach dip
1 bag of sugar
1 bag potato chips
1 3-pack of gum

MY LEAST FAVORITE PART of this trip is the reciept. I love, love, love, love, love seeing the "YOU SAVED" section on my reciept at other stores. My rec. did not say that. So, I have some math to do-I will have to go thru the ads and check prices again. I will work on getting a real total but with a rough estimate I saved at least 55%. I dont know about you, but when I can buy the products my family needs for at least half price I am willing to smile about it. There were some items that I know I saved over 80% on. Not all that shabby huh?... and I got all the items at one store -no running around town.

"Kraft" Chocolate Passion Bowl Recipe

I made this for a family dinner the other night and I thought it was to die for! I would recommend this recipe to anyone! With all the brownie mix and pudding I have on hand I didn't need to buy anything at the store to make this great treat! I substituted the raspberries for blackberries that I had in my garden! I can't wait to make this again!

Ingredients:
3 cups cold milk
2 pkg. (4-serving size each) JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP French Vanilla Whipped Topping, thawed, divided
1 baked 9-inch square brownie layer, cooled, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 5-1/2 cups)
1 pt. (2 cups) raspberries

Directions:
BEAT milk and dry pudding mixes in large bowl with wire whisk 2 min. or until blended. Gently stir in 1 cup of the whipped topping.
PLACE half of the brownies in 2-qt. serving bowl; top with layers of half each of the pudding mixture, remaining whipped topping and raspberries. Repeat all layers.
REFRIGERATE at least 1 hour. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

See the full recipe here!

Special Extra
Chop 2 chocolate-coated caramel-peanut nougat bars (2.07 oz. each). Assemble dessert as directed, topping each layer of raspberries with layer of half of the chopped nougat bars.

Substitute
Substitute 1 pkg. (12 oz.) marble pound cake, cubed, for the baked brownie square and/or undrained thawed frozen raspberries for the fresh raspberries.

Freezing/Canning Vegetables for Less

Yesterday my family and I spent a wonderful afternoon with my husbands family. My in-laws are super thrifty and all have the green thumb! When we were pulling out from their house I felt like we had been grocery shopping. I had over 40 ears of corn, 10 green peppers, 1 bag of blueberries, 12 quarts of canned green beans (my MIL knew I wouldn't be able to do it by myself).a bag of new potatoes, and a bone-in ham! I am super excited to get it all cleaned, frozen and put away! When you come across food for FREE, you better find a way and a place for it! I am excited to show you how to put things like this away for later. Get ready for some fun posts, and wish me luck!

Binder vs. File Method- Hidden Coupons

In the process of clipping all my coupons I came across a few coupons I didn't even know I had!!! I usually just file the coupons away and print off the ABC list without even looking at them! Here are a couple coupons I thought that I would be sad if they expired and I didn't have a chance to use them, just because I didn't know I even had them!
