Yesterday I ran into Smith's to get those extra deals that went well the the coupons from 6/26 newspaper. My total came to $138.67 and I ended up only paying $38.23. My husband is going to kill me if I come home with anymore "stuff". We are in the middle of moving and I keep adding boxes to the pile with all my grocery deals.

Black Friday in June?!?! Double Coupons in Utah

This is the picture I snapped at 6:47am this morning when I pulled up to my nearby Smith's. My mouth almost hit the steering wheel. There were tons of couponers just waiting for the doors to open at 7am. I had my two little ones with me and I was one of the few that had their kids with them. These couponers were serious and they were making game plans!?!? There were a couple groups there that had one person run to the paper towels, another to the Totinos Pizza rolls, and another to the Dawn dish soap. I didn't end up with any of these items in my cart. I instantly had flashbacks to my past Black Friday experiences.

I still can't decide when coupons became such a "big" thing. Did it happen because the economy is in such bad shape and people are out of jobs? Did it happen because it's fun to save money? Or is this just something we experience here in Utah?

There were a couple things I noticed while I was navigating the sea of shopping carts.

• 90% of shoppers were using binders. It made me wonder how many of our readers have started using the binder method?

• A lot of couponers there were buying items that really weren't that good of a deal. Remember, there is a right time and a wrong time to use a coupon. It's good to be selective. Don't just head out to Smith's today and use every coupon under $1.00. For example Cascade dish washing tablets even with a doubled coupon this week really isn't that great of a deal. I pick up my Electrosal Dish washing tablets for .50.

• Quite a few men are couponing, I was surprised to see so many men walking around with fistfuls of coupons. Do any of your husbands do the shopping for you? I still can't get my husband to hand over the coupons when we checkout. What am I talking about. My husband doesn't even go to the grocery store with me.

• The manager at my Smith's was really good about trying to figure out what they ran out of and what items they needed to order more of so everyone can get some great deals. The Mega Coupon event lasts a week, so hopefully everyone gets what they have their eye on.

• Couponers are for the most part pretty courtesy and friendly. Good job guys! It makes the couponing experience so much more enjoyable when are cordial toward one another.

Combining E-Coupons with Manufactures Coupons- More Smith's Matchups

I am a big time rule follower. I truly believe that if coupons are used ethically that these awesome savings we get each week will continue to exist. A couple of readers have e-mailed us and asked us if it is okay to combine e-coupons (online coupons that you load to your shoppers cards) with manufactures coupons. The truth is I don't know if there is an official policy to answer this question. I decided that I would try it today when I went shopping. Before I tried it I asked the cashier, who in turn called over the store director to answer my question. It was decided that it was okay. My bill came to $289.62. After I scanned my Fresh Values card and handed over my coupons my total came to $79.18! My little ones were with me so we ended up with 2 bags of Cheetos, 2 bottles of water and a container of wet wipes that aren't pictured. I blame these items for an extra $10 that shouldn't have been spent, but it is what it is!

Smith's Instant Win Game

Everyday you can come to Smith's website and spin the wheel for a chance to win instant prizes. In March they did this with a basketball hoop and I won a couple FREE grocery items. I am hoping for some luck this time round too! Let us know what you end up with!

Last Day to Take Advantage of Smith's Coupon Event

Just a reminder that today, Tuesday May 18th, is the last day to use your coupons during Smith's Mega Coupon event!

Smiths is rounding coupons that are under $1 to equal $1 off. So .20, .35., .50 and all manufactures coupons under a $1.00 will come off as $1 off at the register! If a coupons say .25/1 Smith's will round it up to $1/1. That is like quadrupling a coupon! No coupon over $1 will be doubled.

I was able to purchase the above for $58.40. I saved $155.66.

I already put away my cold stuff, so I did also buy some milk, lettuce, Sunny D, Jello cups and eggs.
Pinching Your Pennies complied a great list of items that will be dirt cheap after coupons!

While I was checking out I was chatting with some of the Smith's employees and I asked them if they thought we might see events like this more often and they said they might. They told me it is a possibility that every Sunday-Tuesday we might be able to double coupons like this. Wouldn't that be amazing. Let's keep out fingers crossed. I also asked about their online coupon policy being under review and they said it is. Most likely they will no longer be allowing online coupons anymore. They said that there has just been too many fraudulent online coupons. I don't use online coupons anymore, but I know a lot of people would be disappointed. At one point Macey's had to make the same policy, but as of Aug. last year they started accepting them once again. Let's hope for the best.

Open Your Quaker Boxes- Coupons Inside the Hazelnut Latte Boxes

When I went to Smith's on Wednesday I had coupon for $1/1 Quaker True Delights oatmeal. The only flavor they had left was Hazelnut Latte. A girl next to me was loading up on them and I asked her if she tried them and she said she had. I asked her if they tasted like coffee and she said they didn't. So I bought 4 of them. This morning I went to make some and they DO taste and smell like coffee (just saying), but my little boy said look! And guess what he pulled out some great Quaker coupons! So be sure to open up your Hazelnut Latte boxes and grab out your coupons! They were in all 4 of my boxes!
