Meal Planning

Thursday, June 24, 2010 | | 0 comments
This week I have planned the meals around the sale items on the lists for Smiths and Macey's. I didn't feel like there was one store this week that had enough sale items for meal planning to pick it all up at once. I don't love going to more than one store, but I REALLY don't like spending more than I need to in order to feed my family well. So, this means that some weeks there are exceptions. Keep in mind that as you use coupons a pantry fills very fast giving more options for meal planning out of your own cupboards. The meal planning that we do is just to help give ideas of how you can plan using SALE items.

Breakfasts:
Cereal, Orange Juice, Grapes,
Scrambled Eggs, Sausage, Cantaloupe
Poptarts, Milk, Fruit
Granola, Yogurt, Peaches
Biscuits & Gravy, Bananas and Apple Slices

Lunches:

My Shop and Tell

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 | | 3 comments

I hit the Smiths Mega Sale this morning bright and early just like Tori did. However, we seem to have had very different shopping experiences! The store I went to only had a couple of coupon shoppers out. There was no racing to grab items, or finding empty shelves. As I was doing my shopping there were even employees unloading boxes of sale items to make sure the shelves were very heavily stocked. I was super picky about what I bought today. Before shopping I really went through the pantry deciding what items I wanted to stock up on. I left lots of things that were great prices behind due because I did not have online
coupons with me. ( my printer is broken! :( ... )
So, I may have to make another little run when I have that situation solved.
Below is a picture of what came home with me.
7 bottles of mustard, 3 dawn dish soaps, 2 softsoaps, 4 can mandarin oranges, 2 bottles of ketchup, 5 rolls of Bounty Paper Towels, 4 pkgs Carefree Pads, 3 pkgs Huggies Wipes.
A carton of Egglands Best Eggs, and a bag of Red Seedless grapes also came home but are not pictured. My total for this shopping trip came to 66.38 BEFORE coupons and sale prices.
After COUPONS and sale prices
I SPENT $25.84
Thats a 61% savings! Sweet!
Where are you planning to shop this week? Lets see a picture of your groceries! :)

Black Friday in June?!?! Double Coupons in Utah

This is the picture I snapped at 6:47am this morning when I pulled up to my nearby Smith's. My mouth almost hit the steering wheel. There were tons of couponers just waiting for the doors to open at 7am. I had my two little ones with me and I was one of the few that had their kids with them. These couponers were serious and they were making game plans!?!? There were a couple groups there that had one person run to the paper towels, another to the Totinos Pizza rolls, and another to the Dawn dish soap. I didn't end up with any of these items in my cart. I instantly had flashbacks to my past Black Friday experiences.

I still can't decide when coupons became such a "big" thing. Did it happen because the economy is in such bad shape and people are out of jobs? Did it happen because it's fun to save money? Or is this just something we experience here in Utah?

There were a couple things I noticed while I was navigating the sea of shopping carts.

  • 90% of shoppers were using binders. It made me wonder how many of our readers have started using the binder method?

  • A lot of couponers there were buying items that really weren't that good of a deal. Remember, there is a right time and a wrong time to use a coupon. It's good to be selective. Don't just head out to Smith's today and use every coupon under $1.00. For example Cascade dish washing tablets even with a doubled coupon this week really isn't that great of a deal. I pick up my Electrosal Dish washing tablets for .50.

  • Quite a few men are couponing, I was surprised to see so many men walking around with fistfuls of coupons. Do any of your husbands do the shopping for you? I still can't get my husband to hand over the coupons when we checkout. What am I talking about. My husband doesn't even go to the grocery store with me.

  • The manager at my Smith's was really good about trying to figure out what they ran out of and what items they needed to order more of so everyone can get some great deals. The Mega Coupon event lasts a week, so hopefully everyone gets what they have their eye on.

  • Couponers are for the most part pretty courtesy and friendly. Good job guys! It makes the couponing experience so much more enjoyable when are cordial toward one another.

What observations did you make during the Mega Coupon Event this week?

Combining E-Coupons with Manufactures Coupons- More Smith's Matchups

I am a big time rule follower. I truly believe that if coupons are used ethically that these awesome savings we get each week will continue to exist. A couple of readers have e-mailed us and asked us if it is okay to combine e-coupons (online coupons that you load to your shoppers cards) with manufactures coupons. The truth is I don't know if there is an official policy to answer this question. I decided that I would try it today when I went shopping. Before I tried it I asked the cashier, who in turn called over the store director to answer my question. It was decided that it was okay. So here are a couple e-coupon and manufacture match ups that go well at Smith's Mega Coupon Event this week.

Summer Time Homemade Fruit Popsicles- GFCF Friendly

Being on a GFCF diet can be difficult for my son, but I swear it's all about the presentation. The more exciting I make it look, the higher my odds are that my kids will eat it. One of my favorite summer time treats are homemade fruit Popsicles.

These fruit Popsicles are so easy and the kids have no idea how good they are for them. In fact if it's warm enough outside we will eat these for breakfast!

I bought a pack of 4 Popsicle molds at Bed Bath and Beyond for $2.99 and of course I used one of my 20% off coupons =) I let my kids fill them full of any fruit they wanted. Peach and blueberry seems to be a favorite combination at our house. Then I fill the molds full of 100% fruit juice. One of my kids favorite is white grape peach juice and my husband likes pineapple. Put them in the freezer until they are frozen enough to take out of the mold.
I figured each batch of popsicles only costs me about .25 and they are so much better than the sugar loaded ones you buy at the store.
Enjoy!

Healthy Family Tip

The topic of a healthy family means much more than just having a good diet. This week my little one and I made a trip to the library and I learned some interesting little facts about the importance of reading to children. The one that was the top of the list was:

"Reading to young children promotes language acquisition and literacy development and, later on, achievement in reading comprehension and overall success in school."

Reading is such an easy thing to do--- getting your little ones to still another story =)
There are lots of tips about reading to your children on this site here.

Did you know in Utah many of the libraries also hold other activities?
The Salt Lake County Library has a list of activities!
Make sure to check it out! I love finding free activities to do with kids during the summer, dont you?!

Clean Car=A Happy Mom!

There are two things that make me sooo happy! A full tank of gas, and a CLEAN CAR! I know, I am easy to please! Something I dont love? Cleaning the car! I usually clean out the car, and get a wash at least once a week. So, with my total dislike for doing the work myself I have found some sweet deals on having others do it for me! :)
Here are a few car washes in the Salt Lake Valley that have great deals right now:

in South Jordan

in West Jordan

in Draper

With great deals like these available I am more than happy to let someone take care of the car cleaning chore for me!

Gluten and Casein Free Grocery Shopping Tricks

Shortly after my son was diagnosed with Autism I began researching about diet and nutrition. I was startled to learn what progress families see when they switch Autism children's diet to Gluten and Casein Free. I decided to hop on the boat myself and try it out. I am just about willing to try anything to improve my sons condition.
Over the last couple years I had been able to cut our weekly shopping budget to $50 a week, but that included some frozen and boxed dinners. With new diet restrictions my way of shopping changed dramatically. I knew I still wanted to spend $50 a week, but my shopping habits would need to change too. Here are some tricks I have learned when shopping for a healthier lifestyle and diet.

  • 90% off the coupons I use are for cosmetics, diapers, cleaning supplies and paper products. Most coupons for food items are processed and boxed foods. Many of which are unhealthy and contain gluten and casein.
  • The majority of my budget each week goes to fresh produce and meat. Since fresh foods are GFCF okay that is what we eat a lot of.
  • I no longer buy convenience or prepackaged foods. I was actually surprised that by eliminating these items from my shopping list it saved me some money each week.
  • If I see a coupon for a food product that is GFCF I will literally jump up and down since they are very rare.
By sticking to these tricks I am able to stay close to my $200 a month grocery budget. You will start to see my new shopping habits reflect our meal planning and shop and tell stories.
No matter what your families dietary needs are you can do it for less by making coupons work for you. I selectively chose what coupons I will use. I am sure to make a meal plan each and every week so I know exactly how much money I am spending and what coupons I will be using.
Do any of you have special dietary needs? If so, how do you make coupons work for you?

In a couple weeks I will be moving and one thing I am very excited about is that there will be a Rite Aid near me. For years I have watched people get amazing deals at Rite Aid and now I finally can too!
Since I haven't been able to shop at Rite Aid I had to find out some details about how it works from Cassie at the Thrifty Couple and the first step is to sign up for the Wellness Program. When you sign up you'll have access to:
  • Awesome coupons! Including a $5/25 coupon! These will start coming immediately! The e-mail I recieved had over $50 in coupons!
  • Rite Aid has a new program called +UP Rewards. When you present your card at checkout coupons to use on your next transaction will print at the bottom of your receipt.
  • There will be exclusive coupons to those who sign up for the Wellness + Program!
  • Some sale items only are on sale if you use your rewards card!
As soon as you sign up they will e-mail you a temporary card you can print off until your real card arrives in the mail.

A big thanks to The Thrifty Couple for helping me learn the ins and outs of Rite Aid's new Wellness Program!
