What Do I Need to Get Started?

Thursday, June 25, 2009 | | 0 comments
"What do I need to get started on this whole "Grocery Smarts" thing?"
The answer is simple! Sunday's newspaper!

You'll want a subscription to the paper so you can get all those coupons in the paper! The only day of the week the manufactures coupons come in the paper are on Sundays. The only place to get them is in Sundays paper. The awesome news is that Grocery Smarts can get you the best deal possible on papers.
At my home each week I receive 4 Sunday papers, one per person in my home. People always ask me, "What in the world are you going to do with all that extra paper." I have neighbors who enjoy getting a free paper from me, one lady told me she uses it as compost in her garden, but my favorite thing to do is donate them to the local elementary schools recycling bins. They get paid for the paper by the pound so I dump my papers there every other month or so.
After I bring the papers in on Sunday all I do is pull out the coupon inserts. The coupon insert schedule is over on the right hand side of this blog. You can see from Jan-Dec exactly what coupons you will get what weeks.
There are 3 main types of inserts:
1) Proctor and Gamble (P&G)- These coupons come once a month. They are Proctor and Gambles own coupons; Pampers, Mr. clean, Herbal Essence, etc.
2) Smart Source (SS)
3)Red Plum (RP)
SS and RP are just companies that print the coupons. One week you might see Tree Top applesauce coupons in SS and the next month in RP. There is no rhyme or reason to them. They just print the coupons.
By getting a paper subscription there are benefits too:
  • You don't have to get out of bed at 7am to run down to the gas station to make sure you'll get your papers
  • If an insert is ever missing out of a paper (it happened to me for the first time last week) you just call the paper and let them know. Monday they brought me my missing RPs. If you get your paper at the gas station and the inserts are missing, most times it because someone took them, there is nothing to do. It's sad but a reality.
  • When you go on vacation you can put your subscription on hold
  • It helps keep Grocery Smarts lists and classes stay FREE
  • It's cheaper to get a subscription than it is to buy the papers individually
  • It also helps the newspapers stay a float in a struggling economy

If you are ready to get started just give me a call and I can help you get the paper at an amazing rate!

People ask, "Does the cost of the paper really outweigh the savings?"

Without a doubt, YES! Check out my monthly savings report cards here!

For all of you that have newspaper subscriptions would you says it's been worth it?????

The only other thing you'll probably need is a place to keep those coupons! You can read my post here about how to organize the coupons. Don't worry, its not a binder with baseball card holders!

Wednesday Weekly Show and Tell

I love my weekly show and tells! I love seeing how much money you guys all save! Here is a my favorite weekly show and tell this week from Denise....
I just wanted to say THANKS again for helping us use coupons effectively! Attached is a picture of my shopping trip to Ablies today. I spent $39.82 and saved $115.05....for a whopping 74% savings!! And I came away with a coupon for $1/1 lite Ball Park Beef franks and a Catalina coupon for $1/2 Lite, turkey or fat free Ball Park beef franks.
I don't know who was more excited when we got home...me or my three-year old. He saw the can of Chef Boyardee "sports" pasta (that I paid $.35 for) and thought that was the coolest stuff ever. I usually don't ever buy it, but thought we could try it for the price. Of course, he had to have it immediately! I was glad he liked it, but mostly excited that it cost me $.35 to feed both of my kids lunch today!!

Here is what I came away with:
2 Frosted Mini Wheats
2 Apple Jacks
1 Raisin Bran
1 Raisin Bran Extra
1 Sara Lee Whole Wheat Bread
2 Marie Callendar Pasta Al Dente Dinners
3 Healthy Choice All Natural Dinners
4 Jimmy Deam Sausages
3 Ball Park Beef Franks
1 Ball Park Lite Beef Franks
1 Wesson Canola Oil
2 David Sunflower Seeds
1 Reddi Whip
2 Cans Manwich Sloppy Joe Sauce
4 Cans Chef Boyardee Pasta
1 Snack Pack Pudding
1 Dreyers Ice Cream
1 Dibs Ice Cream
1 Dreyers Fruit Bars
1 Skinny Cow Chocolate Truffle Bars
1 Sara Lee Cheesecake
Plus two coupons mentioned above!!
Thanks again Tori!! My freezer and my pantry are bursting lately!!!

Recipes Using Cereal

With all the FREE cereal we are all getting I am sure your husbands are saying NO MORE like mine. We really do have a ton of cereal shoved under beds in our house. You guys know me though, if its FREE I will never leave it behind no matter how much I already have. I bargained with my husband that if I bought more this week I would find more ways than just cold cereal to use it. Here are a few things I came up with:

Monkey Mix
1/4 c. peanut butter
1 (6 oz.) pkg. butterscotch chips
4 c. corn flakes, crushed
Put it into a bowl and mix it all up. I love eating it while we are watching a movie or playing games. So yummy! Some people I know drop it by tablespoons on wax paper and make them into no bake cookies. Either way its sure to make everyone happy!

Honey Bunches of Oats Chicken
(Good Things Utah)

Ingredients:
2 chicken breasts cut into strips or tenders
6 C. crushed honey bunches of oats
2 T. corn meal
1 tsp. garlic salt
1/8 tsp. white pepper
2 C. buttermilk or 2 c milk with 1 tbsp. lemon juice
2 cloves minced garlic

Preparation:
Mix crumbs, corn meal, garlic salt and white pepper together in a ziploc bag, crunch it up until it is crushed but not fine crumbs. Place pieces into buttermilk and garlic, then roll in crumbs. Place on a lightly oiled baking stone and spray the tops of the pieces. Sprinkle the remaining crumbs over the top and spray again. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until chicken is baked through.

1/2 cup Fruit Loops cereal, crushed
1 tbsp melted butter
Directions
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add melted butter, egg, milk and 1 1/2 cups fruit loops. Stir to combine.
Mix 1/4 cup crushed fruit loops with 1 tbsp melted butter.
Spoon muffin batter into greased or paper-lined muffin tins. Sprinkle tops with fruit loop crumb mixture.
Bake at 400F for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened

Directions:

Add dry ingredients and cereal crumbs. Mix thoroughly.Drop by level tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Frost with Orange Icing. For Orange Icing: Mix sugar, butter and enough Juice for smooth icing or spreading consistency. Frost cookies–may decorate with fruit loops.

Baked Cheese Sticks
(All Recipes)

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 egg whites
2 tablespoons water

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a medium baking pan lined with foil. In a large, shallow bowl, crush the corn cereal to 1 cup. Mix together the corn cereal, oregano and garlic salt. Place the flour in a small bowl. In another small bowl, thoroughly beat the egg whites and water. Cut the mozzarella cheese into 12 sticks approximately 2 3/4 inches in length. Dip the cheese sticks in the flour, then the egg mixture, then the cereal mixture. Repeat dipping in the egg and cereal mixture to ensure a complete coating. Arrange cheese sticks on the baking pan. Allow the sticks to set for 30 minutes.
