Healthy Family Tip

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 | | 0 comments

Grocery bags

Do you use "reuseable" grocery bags? I do, and I love them. I use them for much more than just getting groceries home from the store. They carry towels to the pool, toys and and treats for play dates, and store random things that collect in the car, the list goes on and on. Did you know those bags could be making your family sick? I got home from a recent shopping trip and realized the bags were definitely not looking to fresh.
Then, I read this post on Happy Housewife and will admit it kinda made me sick to think that I could have made my family ill! I did a little more research and realized lots of the practices that they talked about are ones that I have done in past (using bags for other things).

A quote from one study says:
"Our findings suggest a serious threat to public health, especially from coliform bacteria including E. coli, which were detected in half of the bags sampled," saidCharles Gerba, a UA professor of soil, water and environmental science and co-author of the study. "Furthermore, consumers are alarmingly unaware of these risks and the critical need to sanitize their bags on a weekly basis."

Yikes huh?! Our Healthy Family tip this week is to make sure those reuseable bags get washed between use. Another way to help make sure you are keeping things clean is to designate bags for produce, meat, and other items. I have bags designated for produce (green bag) meat (red bag) and other groceries (black, blue and purple). Another super easy way to do that is to use a permanent marker and write what the bag is to be used for. Now I am off to wash the reuseable bags before the new sales start tomorrow!

Kmart Doubles Health and Beauty Coupons this Week

Sunday, July 4, 2010 | | 1 comments
This week Kmart is doubling Health and Beauty coupons. Be sure to check here to see if your Kmart is participating in this event or you could even call your local store to check.

Here are some details to know before heading out:

  • You will have to have a shoppers rewards card and scan it before your transaction (I signed up right at the register)
  • You can only double 5 coupons per customer per day
  • Only coupons up to $2 will be doubled
I myself do not go to Kmart when they double coupons. I find that 5 coupons isn't worth my drive. I also think that Kmart's prices are higher than many other stores.

If you do decide to do some shopping Bargain Blessings has a list of potential match ups with some items that end up being FREE!

If you end up going let us know how your experience is! We will be anxiously waiting to hear what our readers thought about the event.

Confessions of a Couponer

Saturday, July 3, 2010 | | 2 comments

I heart my full pantry!
Yep! I do. Silly I know but I love it so much! I love that using coupons and grocery smarts list That's my confession from a "couponer" this week. As I was planning for a family event I made a grocery list and then shopped from my own shelves. My husband looked at the list I had made when I was done "shopping" in my pantry and was AMAZED at all the things I had crossed off the list because we already had them on hand. It was so much fun! Lots of times when I bring products home for ridiculously low prices I will write how much I spent on them vs. regular price. When we added it up there was over $100 in savings just on the ONE list I had made for a family party we will be having. Cool huh? The list of things that do need to be purchased had just produce and milk (not things I keep 3 months of on hand =) )
Do you love your full pantry that has come from using coupons too?

Fun Stuff This Weekend

Fun in the Sun-Healthy Family Tip

Friday, July 2, 2010 | | 0 comments
If you're planning to have some fun in the sun this weekend remember to take the sun screen. I was looking at the store display of all the different levels and could not decide what to buy. If you have ever wondered the same thing then here is a little bit of info about sunscreen.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number you see associated with SPF represents the length of time you can stay out in the sun without burning, multiplied by the corresponding number. The SPF is a laboratory derived ratio which measures the increased amount of radiation which causes redness in skin when the sunscreen tested is applied, compared to when it is not used at all. For example if it takes 10 minutes for unprotected skin to show redness, then an SPF15 sunscreen correctly applied, will take 15 times as long or 150 minutes to burn. This and lots of other great info found on skinhealth.com, wisegeek.com and rnguidetoskincare.com

Then there are a few other factors you do need to take into account:
-Clothing rubbing against skin, playing in water, or sweat can all make it wear off faster.
-Fair Skin burns easily and should have sunscreen reapplied more often- My little one hates sunscreen but a minute of fighting while applying it is better than a sunburned little kid!
-The temperature, and if you are in direct sun or in the shade
Remember that its much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to using sunblock!

If you need to pick up some sunscreen I found an online coupon to use!
Coppertone $1/1. It is on sale this week at Smiths so combine the sale and coupon for a great price!

Online Coupon Reset

It is the first of the month, so you know what that means! The online coupons have reset. My favorites are the

Here are some tips about online coupons:

The IPS (internet printables)

  • Manufactures set limits on the amounts of coupons printed. When the limit is reached they pull their coupons off. That means occasionally you will go the print a coupon and it will be gone unless you printed it off at the beginning.

  • This is even more important toward the end of a month. Coupons group A-C are reset at the first of the month, so on the FIRST, when the coupons reset, they start out at zero.

  • Sometimes manufactures will reset their coupons after the limit is reached, but don't count on it. Just consider yourself lucky if they do.

  • Troubleshooting IPS. I wish I could help out in that area, but I am not tech savvy enough. I have heard that switching browsers can help. Example: On Internet Explorer and they won't print try Fire Fox or vice virsa.

Some questions to commonly asked IP questions answered:

  • Where are online coupons located? All over! You also find coupons on manufactures websites, you can receive them via-email and sometimes websites will give them to you after you join their mailing lists or take a survey for them. When the Grocery Smarts lists are up you will see links that take you to online coupons. The best part about those lists are that if there are coupons online, they are on the lists. You will never have to search for coupons for items on the list yourself! Grocery Smarts lists do all the work for you.
  • "Are IP'S worth it? It seems like a lot of paper and ink to be wasting." My answer is it depends. I think after you have a couple months worth of newspaper coupons its hit and miss. I only print ones of that make things close to FREE or if it is something I really like or know I will need. You'll never catch me printing of cereal coupons or toothpaste coupons. That is because I have DOZENS of them from my newspaper.

  • Now, if you are staring out and only have a few coupons from the paper on the list then I definitely recommend using IPS to maximize your savings. My sister in law started out and only had a weeks worth of coupons, but wanted to start saving right away, so she maximized her coupons by using IPS. She told me her husband was frustrated by all the paper in ink she was using, but after she shopped she had saved over $50. That paper and ink WAY over paid for itself. IP'S are a great way of subsidizing newspaper coupons, but not a great substitute! Newspaper coupons will benefit you way more in the the long end.

  • "How long do IP'S last". IPS have expiration dates on them the same way other coupons do.
  • "Can we print them off in black and white?" It depends on your store. Some stores will take black and white, some will not. Be sure to ask if you are planning on trying black and white. There reason behind that is they are trying to protect themselves from illegal photocopied coupons.

  • Do all stores take IP's and the answer is no. Not all stores do take IPS. My suggestion is to call your store and ask if you are planning on using them on your shopping trip.

Also don't forget the two IP's per HOUSEHOLD rule! Have fun printing!

Its very easy to make and so good! You can use whatever kind of fruit you like, or try blueberries and raspberries to be festive for the weekend. My family has tried lots of different combinations, and we love it every time!

Fruit Pizza I Recipe

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and 3/4 cup sugar until smooth. Mix in egg. combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt; stir into the creamed mixture until just blended. Press dough into an ungreased pizza pan.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool.
  4. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla until light. Spread on cooled crust.
  5. Arrange desired fruit on top of filling, and chill.
