MEGA SWAG BUCK FRIDAY!

Friday, October 23, 2009 | | 0 comments

A few weeks ago I shared with you about a new way to search the internet called Swagbucks. You get paid in "swag bucks" to search the internet the same way you already search for things. After you earn your swagbucks you can redeem them for gift cards and other prizes from the swag store. You can read my post about swagbucks here for all the details.

As if it was already sweet enough to get rewarded for doing something you are already doing, how about having a MEGA swag buck day!
"Every Friday, Swagbucks gives you a chance to win huge, gargantuan, oodles, tons of....Mega Swag Bucks with your searches. From 3 to 100 Swag Bucks, we give away up to 10,000 Swag Bucks in Mega Bills every Friday!"
Taken from Swag Bucks official blog
So, make sure on Friday's you do some MEGA searching to win MEGA swag bucks!
If you don't already have Swag Bucks go here to sign up. After you sign up check your e-mail and they will let you start searching!

Be sure to vote in this weeks poll!

Do you take your kids to the grocery store when you are using coupons?

The Results are In....

Last week we asked you what day the majority of you grocery shop and the results are in:

  • 12% of you shop on Monday
  • 9% of you shop on Tuesday
  • 55% of you shop on Wednesday
  • 14% of shop on Thursday
  • 9% of you shop on Friday
  • 12% of you shop on Saturday
  • 7% of you shop on Sunday

Well you did it again Smart Shoppers. Wednesday is said to be the best day to do your shopping and the majority of you are shopping on Wednesdays. In my own experience these are what I have observed in shopping on various days:

Tuesdays: Tuesdays are the days people are most likely to eat out for the week, so many people are running in to the grocery store to pick up a healthy dinner they can prepare at home. This made the lines and check out time a lot longer. It's also the last day of the sale so many times the shelves have been cleared of any item I am looking for. I try to avoid Tuesday's but on occasions I find myself procrastinating getting to the sale and then when I shop I am kicking myself for waiting until the last minute.

Wednesdays: I myself have found Wednesday's to be the optimal shopping day. It is the day the new ad starts so my shelves are stocked up and ready to go. I rarely find an item I am looking for not available. I also have found that it is the day I run into a lot of my coupon friends! It seems like we are the only ones in the store that day. I often times find the best parks on Wednesdays too =)

Thursdays: I once asked my store what day they thought was best for shopping and they told me Thursday. I thought I would give it a try. I did find that the store was well stocked and that a lot of things were marked down such as meat, bakery items and produce for a great price. The only problem I found was that there seemed to be half as many employees! It seemed like everyone was moving so slow. Maybe because Friday was right around the corner, but checkout seemed to take an extremely long time.

Saturdays: I quickly learned that Saturday late afternoon/ early evening was the worst day to do my shopping with our without coupons. It seems like everyone goes to do a HUGE shopping trip for the week on Saturday. It seems like everyone is there with their entire family and the store quickly turns into a zoo, with my own children being no exception to the rule! Saturday's you wait in line for over an hour with peoples heaping carts in front of you. It use to be the last thing I noticed when I walked in so I would go and do all my shopping and then get up to the check out line to realize it was going to be as long checking out as it took me to actually gather everything into my own cart. Now when I walk into a store I check out the lines first and then decide whether it is worth it or not.

Thank you for everyone who voted in this poll! It is fun to see what the majority of you are doing to achieve the most success at the grocery store! Be on the lookout for this weeks poll in a few hours!

Calendar is Open

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 | | 0 comments

Wow, I can't believe how fast time is flying by, almost as quickly as the leaves are changing. With time going by so fast, so is our calendar. I guess everyone is wanting to save money on groceries and household items so they can put more away for the holidays wink wink.

The month of November and December are already filling up fast!

We teach free classes for your clubs, staff meetings, enrichment activities, and girl's nights out!

We are also announcing our new "Couples Date Night" class. We have found that many husbands out there are shopping with their wives and some even shopping instead of the wives! I remember after I learned how to start couponing how many questions my husband had for me. So many times I wished he had been at the class I went to, to hear all about it. What an awesome opportunity for you both to hear a class. One of my favorite things about saving money on groceries is how happy it makes my hubby! I have often times caught him sharing how to use Grocery Smarts to friends and co-workers. In fact, one time I caught him taking a picture of my "a lot for less" and texting it to his friends! So, call a babysitter and schedule your own "Couples Date Night " class for all your friends and their spouses.

E-mail us at sheshopssmart@gmail.com with the date you are looking for and we can put your class on the calendar. After we confirm the date and time of your class we will e-mail you a host packet with invitations you can use to hand out to your guests.
Classes are always on a first come basis and are filling up quickly. For more info about what happens at a class check out our post here.

New Kid on the Block

WinCo had it's Grand Opening yesterday here in Utah! They have two new locations at:

  • 7020 South 700 West, Midvale
  • 2572 South 5600 West, West Valley City

In my hometown we had a WinCo right down the street and my brother and I would love going to the big bins of bulk food that they had and bagging up the foods we needed: rice, spices, trail mix, candy (I loved pulling out all those vanilla tootsie rolls out of the variety bin. It was the only way I could get exactly what I wanted) etc. so I was excited to hear it was coming to Utah. They have low prices, are clean and are fast at checking out. I remember their pizzas being super good too! WinCo couldn't have opened their doors at a better time with Albertson's getting ready to close theirs. This will be a great thing for the state and us shoppers.

Here are some tips on how to shop Winco:

  • Stores are between 90,000-100,000 sq. ft. with a huge selection of groceries, fresh meat and produce, fresh bakery, gigantic bulk foods and large deli.
  • They are open 24 hours
  • They say they receive daily shipments which is great for those of us who have run into things disappearing of shelves when it is a hot coupon and sale item.
  • They do not have weekly ads. For the next couple weeks we will receive weekly circulars sharing with us what will be on sale, but in the future there will not be weekly ads showing what is on sale that week.
  • WinCo prides itself on having the lowest prices and told me that they do price match competitors ads. Since they do not have their own weekly ads this would allow you to take your grocery smarts lists, coupons and store ads with you, match the ads there and then if you run across any WinCo deals you can buy them! Their produce, bakery and meat department were very clean and nice =) I would feel comfortable buying my weekly meat and produce there each week, and most of you know how picky I am.
  • WinCo does accept coupons; online and manufactures coupons.
  • Be aware that if a coupon doesn't scan in, they will not manually enter it in, so if you are using a light ink setting, change it for your WinCo coupons.
  • They will not accept credit cards. You must use a cash payment or a payment that requires a pin number.
  • You must bag your own groceries.
Now for the fun part. With any "grand opening" comes stellar prices. Pinching Your Pennies had the list of advertised deals here.

I made a run late last night. I heard the morning and afternoon shopping was impossible. People were waiting for parks and even shopping carts. Last night was busy too, but not impossible. The lines moved fast and I was in an out in about 45 min. which I thought was good for learning the aisles of a new store. Here is what I walked away with:

2-12-packs Mtn. Dew 2@ $1.98
2- Capri Sun Fruit Drinks 10-pack 2@ .98
1- Tillamook Medium Cheddar Cheese 32 oz. $3.98 (used $1/1)
2- Bar S Sliced Bacon 2@ .98
1- American Falls Water 24-pack .5 liter $1.98
1- Northern Bath Tissue 12-pack double rolls $2.98( used $1/1)
3- Large Muffins 6 pack 3 @ $1.98
4-Chex Mix, Gardettos, or Bugles 4@ .98 (used .40/1 here and here)
3- Bear Creek Soup Mixes 3 @ $1.98
4- boxes Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal @$2.38 (used 2 $3/1 and 2 $1.50/1 coupons from Vocal Point)
5 lbs rice @ .50lb
3 green peppers @.48
2 red peppers @.48
2 dozen eggs @.88
3 gallons of milk @ $1.48
1 box fruit snacks @ .98 (.40/1)
1 lbs Bananas at .18/lb
1 10lb bag potatoes @.68
1 jar minced garlic @$2.98
1 package of hot dogs @.58
1 package Frigo string cheese @$1.98 (used .40/1 RP8/9)
Total: $40.28
Saved: There is no preferred savings card savings, but I saved $16.20 in coupons
