How to Make Homemade Freezer Strawberry Jam

Monday, April 5, 2010 | | 7 comments
Have you seen the strawberries lately? They are gorgeous. Emily and I each bought some and decided to try our hand at freezer jam. We couldn't believe how easy it really was, how short a time it took and how yummy it really was!

You will need:
1 package Sure Jell pectin

2 containers of Strawberries (on sale at Smith's for $1.50)

4 cups of sugar

  • Wash the strawberries and cut in half

  • Throw into a bowl and mash them

(Emily's husband isn't a huge fan of chunks in his jam, so Emily tried using the blender and pureeing it, but her jam was a little runny. We both agreed that some chunks are good to have

  • Take 2 cups of smashed strawberries and combine them in a bowl with 4 cups of sugar. Yeah, Yeah we know it's loaded with sugar. We told you it was yummy, not low in sugar.

  • Mix it up really good and let it it sit for about 10 min, stirring occasionally.

  • At the end of your 10 min take a sauce pan and boil 3/4 cup water. Throw in your Sur-Jell pectin and stir for at least 1 min.

  • Add the pectin to your strawberry/sugar mixture.

  • Mix it up really good until the sugar and pectin are completely combined.

  • Pour into containers or jars.

  • Let it set out for 24 hours then put it away in the freezer.

The jam can last up to 3 months in the fridge or 1 year in the freezer.

Emily and I repeated the above process 3 times.

Kmart Doubles Coupons

Last year around this same time Kmart was rumored to be doubling coupons. Last minute they changed their mind and pulled out? A lot of people here in Utah were disappointed. This year when Kmart issued out the list of what stores were doubling coupons and Utah was on the list I rolled my eyes expecting to have happen what did last year. Well, this year Kmart has supposedly pulled through and is doubling coupons. now, I say supposedly because you just never know for sure how each store will handle this event. After talking to a manager about this event this is what I have discovered:

  • You must scan in your shopper rewards card FIRST!
  • You can only double 5 coupons per day
  • You can only double one of each coupon, so you know how we have multiples of each coupon, you can only use one of your multiples, not all of them
  • They will only double a coupon up to $2.00

I live about 25 min away from Kmart and I don't even plan on going there this week. I just don't feel like fighting the crowds to use only 5 coupons a day and only up to a $2.00 value! In the spectrum of things that means the most I can save a day using coupons is $20. It isn't worth the drive for me. I bet all the good deals are low on stock as we speak. I tried to go and get Princess and the Frog at Kmart a few weeks ago and the stock clerk made it clear to me that they have very little in the back and most of the products are on the shelf, so when they are gone, they are gone. I also think Kmart is already a higher priced store when it comes to grocery products.

How come Utah doesn't see more events like this?

Who knows. I am sure after getting into couponing you have realized that places in the Mid West and back East and even in Arizona, double coupons frequently. In fact I have friends that have told me about triple and quadruple coupon days in their area! Yes, I will admit I am jealous of being able to quadruple coupons, but it's just the way it is. I am happy with what I do save using coupons and I am happy with the way my food storage grows each week by using coupons.

So, if you are going to Kmart or you have already be sure to report back with what your experience it like. We would all love to hear!

Total Price for 28 boxes of Post cereals

$20.00 plus tax

That's an average of only .71 for a box of cereal

I don't like doing multiple transactions, but for this sale it seemed to be in my best interest. As always I encourage you to be courtesy of the people behind you in line. Consider letting some one behind you check out in between transactions or take your first 3 transactions to the car and come back in for your next 3 transactions. Remember the rule of friendly couponing!
One more note_-I don't consider .71 a great stock up deal on cereal, but the kinds of cereal that I ended up purchasing are at the TOP of my kids, and husbands list. I try to keep it under .50 for cereal, but this cereal really is a favorite at our home.

Recipes with sale items.... since winter has returned

Friday, April 2, 2010 | | 0 comments
Good Friday Morning! So, I thought it was supposed to be spring? Why is there like 6 inches of snow in my yard???? With the weather being like it is I laughed when I found this recipe-it just seems fitting- with "snowball" in the name-and I have had a serious sweet tooth the past little while. This week there are lots of great items on sale! Cereal at Smiths being one of those great deals! This week, the recipe I will be trying will use Honey Bunches of Oats. At as cheap as a dollar a box I am willing to try a new recipe! I told myself I will start watching what I eat again on Monday and then my recipes will need to go back to healthy....but until then enjoy :)

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED SNOWBALLS

TOTAL TIME:
45 min.
MAKES:
24 servings

(1 ball per serving)

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter 1 pkg. (10 oz.) marshmallows 5 cups Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds Cereal 1 container (7 oz.) dark semi-sweet dipping chocolate

DIRECTIONS

MELT butter in large saucepan on low heat. Add marshmallows; cook 5 min. or until marshmallows are melted and mixture is well blended, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in cereal. Cool slightly. SHAPE into 24 balls with moistened hands. Place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet; cool completely. HEAT dipping chocolate as directed on container. Dip top of each ball in chocolate; return, dipped-side up, to baking sheet. Refrigerate 15 min. or until chocolate is firm. Cover and refrigerate remaining dipping chocolate.

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

Variation: These treats taste great when made with any flavor of Honey Bunches of Oats Cereal.

Free Formula Samples

Thursday, April 1, 2010 | | 1 comments
Here are some FREE formula sample offers. I myself don't have any one drinking formula, but I usually give my samples to my friends that are expecting or throw them into my 72 hour kits. I figure that maybe someday they might come in handy to barter with?

Enfamil

Online Coupons Reset

It is the first of the month, so you know what that means! The online coupons, Group A-Group C have reset. My favorites are the $5/1 Enfagrow formula and $1.50 off Water Softener salt. Here are some tips about online or Internet printable coupons:

The IPS (internet printables)

  • Manufactures set limits on the amounts of coupons printed. When the limit is reached they pull their coupons off. That means occasionally you will go the print a coupon and it will be gone unless you printed it off at the beginning.

  • This is even more important toward the end of a month. Coupons group A-C are reset at the first of the month, so on the FIRST, when the coupons reset, they start out at zero.

  • Sometimes manufactures will reset their coupons after the limit is reached, but don't count on it. Just consider yourself lucky if they do.

  • I know some people are having problems with IPS. I wish I could help out in that area, but I am not tech savvy enough. I have heard that switching browsers can help. Example: On Internet Explorer and they won't print try Fire Fox or vice virsa. Another great resource is pinching your pennies. They have an entire forum to troubleshooting your IPS.

Some questions to commonly asked IP questions answered:

  • Where are online coupons located? All over! You can see over the the left hand side of this there are online coupons, group A-Singles . You can also find coupons on manufactures websites, you can receive them via-email and sometimes websites will give them to you after you join their mailing lists or take a survey for them. When the Grocery Smarts lists are up you will see links that take you to online coupons. The best part about those lists are that if there are coupons online, they are on the lists. You will never have to search for coupons for items on the list yourself! Grocery Smarts lists do all the work for you.
  • "Are IP'S worth it? It seems like a lot of paper and ink to be wasting." My answer is it depends. I think after you have a couple months worth of newspaper coupons its hit and miss. I only print ones of that make things close to FREE or if it is something I really like or know I will need. You'll never catch me printing of cereal coupons or toothpaste coupons. That is because I have DOZENS of them from my newspaper.

  • Now, if you are staring out and only have a few coupons from the paper on the list then I definitely recommend using IPS to maximize your savings. My sister in law started out and only had a weeks worth of coupons, but wanted to start saving right away, so she maximized her coupons by using IPS. She told me her husband was frustrated by all the paper in ink she was using, but after she shopped she had saved over $50. That paper and ink WAY over paid for itself. IP'S are a great way of subsidizing newspaper coupons, but not a great substitute! Newspaper coupons will benefit you way more in the the long end.

  • "How long do IP'S last". IPS have expiration dates on them the same way other coupons do. Most times they expire WAY faster than the ones in the paper. That's why I only print the ones off from the list that week. Otherwise they tend to expire before I have a chance to use them.

  • "Can we print them off in black and white?" It depends on your store. Some stores will take black and white, some will not. Be sure to ask if you are planning on trying black and white. There reason behind that is they are trying to protect themselves from illegal photocopied coupons.

  • Do all stores take IP's and the answer is no. Not all stores do take IPS. I do know that Fresh Market and Smiths DO and as of August first Associated Foods started accepting IP's again. My suggestion with other stores is call ahead and ask if you are planning on using them on your shopping trip.

Also don't forget the two IP's per HOUSEHOLD rule! Have fun printing!

Here is an e-mail from the She Shops Smart inbox....

Hi

I have been following your blog for several months ago, along with my daughter. We are both so grateful to you for all you do and have taught us!

We have been going down to the convenience store each Sunday and picking up our papers. However this past Sunday I purchased 3 papers just to get home to discover there were no coupon inserts.

When I called Daily Herald on Monday they said they don't guarantee the coupons unless you actually subscribe because if they run out then those go to paying subscribers first. Makes sense but doesn't help me out unless I sign up for a subscription.

I read on your blog tonight that you are able to get discounts on multiple subscriptions. I am interested in 3 Sunday papers.

Please let me know what information I will need to provide you.

Of course we can help you and anyone else who needs Sunday's paper. Grocery Smarts has an INCREDIBLE deal on the paper and it costs less money than going and buying the paper at the gas stations or grocery stores. Gas station and grocery store locations do not even include the same inserts all the time. The only way to guarantee the inserts is to subscribe to the paper. We don't post all the information about the paper here on our blog, but what we do is if you send us an e-mail with where you live, then we can tell you about the options in your area. After you have reviewed the prices if you would like to order the paper you can call us to place your order. If you haven't already taken the plunge to get the coupons on Sundays, seriously consider it, because I know I wouldn't be as successful as I am at saving money on groceries without my newspaper coupons. Just send an e-mail to sheshopssmart@gmail.com with the city you live in and we will promptly reply back!

Part 2 on the newspaper coupons coming soon!

Easters on its way....

Good Monday Morning everyone! I hope you all had a nice weekend. I enjoyed it! I love that the we have been able to enjoy a little bit of warm spring weather! With Easter Sunday quickly approaching here are a few coupons you may want to use if you haven't picked up Easter outfits for your little chicks, or the items to put in the baskets.

When I first started using coupons I had no idea what kind of a world I was getting into.-lol Now I use coupons for EVERYTHING. It seems odd to me if I get to a checkout register at a store and DON'T have a coupon to use. :) I haven't found an Easter outfit for my little guy yet. (I honestly just kinda spaced it, and now its not even a full week away- oopps) So, here are some coupons I found I will be taking with me when I head out for a little shopping later today to try and find something handsome for him to wear.

Carters:
Here is a 20% off any $50 (or more) Printable Coupon
There is also another one you can use if your total will be less than $50
Here is a $10 off Printable Coupon. (Valid March 1-31)

OshKosh:
If you join their "club" they email you coupons. You can sign up by going to their site. Its super easy. There currently is a $10 off Printable but the link is not working for me to share it with you. Sign up yourself or do a google search for it.

Gymboree
There is a 20% off coupon inside the March issue of "Parenting Early Years" Magazine
It is valid in Store or online thru March 31st.

---
After I find an out fit for him, I also have to pick up the candy to fill the Easter eggs and basket with. Of course, I will be using coupons for these things as well.

Michaels
% off coupon from the newspaper
I plan on using this one to buy a new package of plastic eggs.

Roberts
You can request 40% off any one item at any time. You simple ask the sales clerk as they are ringing your items up. - Keep in mind if you go there to pick up a new basket or Easter decor.

---
The grocery store is next door to the craft store, so I will hop over there to pick up some candy after that. I will round up the coupons to use on candy and post them in a bit. Its time to make some breakfast before I start thinking about candy.
